JOURNEY

Journey utilises a simplistic art style in terms of their choice in colour which does not distract the player. Instead the subtle use in varying colours keeps the game unified as elements do not contrast drastically from the rest of the composition. The cell-shaded appearance of the game inspires how we would present lighting within our polygonal style for our 3D animation. This would seem more appropriate as our character styles would made of polygons and harsher shadows instead of a gradient would seem more appropriate.

MONUMENT VALLEY

Monument Valley employs a minimalist art style, it does not texture objects which do not need to be textured. For example, the walls and paths on each level are kept clean, free of texture, the only form of texture that exists is placed to convey to the player that there are a set of stairs or other objects that affects how the player plays the game. This style will help us take into account what information must be present when modeling and designing characters and objects in order to create understanding to the viewer. The background is also a detail to be considered as the 2D background may save time when rendering, however keeping the foreground 3D.

POLYCRAFT

Polycraft employs simple polygonal shapes to generate the characters and objects. It evokes some of the retro games while providing present day gameplay. We wish to emulate this style within our character models, as a lower polygon count would allow for quicker renders. For the purpose of our animation with a lot of action, being able to quickly render short clips would aid the efficiency in the design process.
